Extending "Name" column "to fit" the longest entry..
Once you have the folder set the way you want it, go to Tools > Folder Options and click on the View tab. Click on "Apply to Folders." Answer Yes to the popup, then OK. It should stay this way each time you open Explorer. SC Tom OT: Sorry your retirement isn't what you thought it would be. Mine makes me wish I had done it at 55 instead of waiting until 59 (couldn't have afforded it then, though).

I have always had success, by double clicking on the line to the left of the arrow at the end of the name column. SC Tom and mikeyhsd: Have received your replies to my question. I'll check then out and report back here as to which resolves the issue. David (Whose retirement hasn't been as exciting as I was lead to believe.)

To: SC Tom (About his "retirement" comment...) Un related to the question but an aside on your comment about my retirement comment. OT: Sorry your retirement isn't what you thought it would be. Mine makes me wish I had done it at 55 instead of waiting until 59 (couldn't have afforded it then, though). Didn't and wouldn't have made any difference for me either. I retired at 68 and and even delaying that long echos loudly what you said - NO amount of preparing financially would cover all the inane policies and changes being made (mostly politically and some even retroactively). Florida (state of residence) has taken some bizarre steps to try to reduce/eliminate their huge cash short-fall - canceling programs, closing prisons, canceling health support ( particularly for the older and the children) and juvenile justice. In addition, all (well, most anyway) of the exciting plans my wife (oops, sorry, not politically correct - make that the "spouse" - can't be mine either, it implies a slave like "ownership" like relationship) and I had planned had to be postponed (mostly permanently) when the the available cash was routed elsewhere. I'm busier now than I was the last two or three years I was still working. Ain't life a gas...(or to quote Frank and Dean - ain't it a kick in the teeth :). (After you've read this, if you can delete this message feel free to remove it.) David (Whose retirement hasn't been as exciting as I was lead to believe.)

I hope this is the right place but fear it probable isn't - sigh, the curse of programmers. I'm getting tired of having to repeatedly reset sn option each time I change the display of the contents of folders. I have captured four shots to help you understang what I'm asking. In the first (circled in red) the elipses indicating hidded characters. In the second (also in red) the table column name. In image three (also in red) is the results of right-clicking on the column title (Name) with the option of "Size Column to Fit." In the last image you see the column "extended to fit." My question is: is there some means to set the "Size to Fil" option so that it is always on? (I haven't fould one yet [ checked Bing, Google, and various MS site searches; I also checked the "possible answers" included with the "ask a question" option but without success].) Any ideas/suggestions?David (Whose retirement hasn't been as exciting as I was lead to believe.)
